From the Ground Up — The Art of Building Dry Stone Walls

October 08 - 10, 2010

Instructor: Richard Tufnell

This workshop will cover the basics of how to construct a dry stone wall. The workshop uses a hands-on stone wall project at the entrance to the Settlement School to lead students through the steps involved in dry stone masonry. Students will learn how to cut and place stones in a sturdy and aesthetically pleasing manner. The workshop also includes presentations on the history of dry stone construction and demonstrations by instructor Richard Tufnell. By the end of the workshop, students will have completed a section of the wall from the ground course to the capstone.

Richard Tufnell will be returning for the fifth year to lead the dry stone construction workshop. Richard is an award-winning stone mason who lives in an 18th century stone farm house in France with his wife Amanda. His work on dry stone projects has taken him to forty countries. In the United States, he has worked on projects in several national and state parks. The city of Lexington, Kentucky awarded him the keys to the city for his work to help found the Dry Stone Conservancy and revive interest in the art of dry stone masonry. He has written numerous newspaper and journal articles on dry stone construction.

This workshop is designed to accommodate all skill levels. Class size is limited to 15.

General information

What to bring: Students should bring comfortable work clothes, sturdy shoes or boots, and heavy-duty work gloves. Television is not available at Pine Mountain, so participants may want to bring reading materials, cards, or other leisure time materials. Snacks will be furnished during the day, but students may want to bring their own snacks for after dinner. Students should also bring any prescription medications. The nearest pharmacy is 16 miles from campus.

Communication: Cell phone service is spotty at Pine Mountain because of the topography and lack of cell phone towers in the area. Most people can receive a signal to make calls and occasionally to receive calls or messages. The School provides dial-up Internet access in Laurel House, which houses the dining hall and meeting rooms. (We're working on getting broadband access to our area!)
