Memo to Exotic, Invasive Plants: Take a Hike!

Pine Mountain continues to make progress on eradication on exotic, invasive plant species on campus. Staff members have been joined by Kyle Napier, southeastern regional manager for the Kentucky State Nature Preserves and Merril Flanary, Kentucky Natural Lands Trust's Blanton Forest Steward, and several groups, including students from Kentucky Country Day School and Miami Valley School, and teens from Kentucky YMCA Y-Corps and First Unitarian Church of Louisville.

Exotic, invasive plant species pose a threat to native plants by overtaking them and eventually crowding out them.

You can do your part to control exotic, invasive species where you live. Learn about what plants are native to your area. Your county extension agent, native plant societies, and biologists at nearby colleges and universities may be able to give this information to you. When considering what plants to put in your yard or garden, only buy native plants. Learn how to eradicate exotic, invasive species. Some species may be removed by simply pulling them up. Others may require applications of herbicides, some of which must be done by people certified to use those chemicals.
