New Sustainability Classes Offered


1. Introduction to Sustainability — This class is adaptable for students of all ages. This class introduces the concept of sustainability and how it relates to the interaction among culture, environment and economy. Two interactive exercises will allow students to begin to understand how food and energy systems are connected. Class discussion will focus on ways to conserve energy. Key Concepts are: sustainable food and agriculture, sustainable energy and appropriate technology.

2. Sustainable Agriculture and Food - This class is adaptable for students of all ages. Students discuss and learn many aspects of food and food production through observation and hands-on activities in the School's community garden teaching plots. Specific activities will depend upon the season. Topics covered include: soil, compost, energy use, solid waste, water and nutrient cycles, edible parts of plants, and small- to medium-scale food production. Key Concepts are: Soil. Diversity. Water. Mulch. Cover crops. Compost. Seeds, seedlings, plants, harvest. Difference between annual and perennial plants. Organic. Sustainable. Local.

3. Sustainable Energy and Appropriate Technology — (CURRENTLY NOT BEING OFFERED — This class will be offered in the near future. Contact Randal Pfleger for more details.) This class is adaptable for students of all ages. Students learn about sources of energy and discuss energy use in their home, school, cars, and yards. The class emphasizes where energy comes from, how we use energy, ways to use less energy, and some of the challenges in the future related to energy.
Key Concepts are: Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation; Fossil fuels (Oil, Coal, Nuclear) and large-scale hydro-electric power; Alternative energy: Wind mills, solar (active/passive), micro-hydro, geo-thermal.
